These are really good covers. The Vietnam War is always been a conflict that I've been interested in learning more about. I was born in 1970. I've never done it though.
I was in Jr. High school during the era of these covers, and the cover shot of LBJ with Gen Westmorland reminds me of this encounter. In 1971, as a senior in HS, I attended an event called "A Presidential Classroom For Young Americans" in Washington D.C. We stayed at the Mayflower Hotel and on the Saturday night of the stay we went to get the elevator, headed down for a banquet-dinner. When the doors opened there was General Westmoreland, in full uniform, headed to an evening dress affair in one of the many ballrooms. He looked at us, smiled, and said, "Hello Lads". I believe Senator Ted Kennedy was also in the elevator car, but the impression I'll always remember the most was the full dress uniform and silvery hair of the General.
I saw him at an Officer Candidate School graduation when I was stationed at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland in 1967.
He was giving a speech on how we are winning the war to all the new Second LT's.
Ah, 'LIFE' as it used to be...
