Orange County Views

Looking up Harbor Blvd toward Garden Grove Boulevard from a construction scaffold on the 22 freeway under construction at the time in 1963.

1965 Helicopter shot of the nearly completed Wilbur Clark's Crest Hotel in Anaheim. This was just a stone's throw from Disneyland and the long ago defunct Melodyland Theater in the Round.

Buffums Department Store, Santa Ana California. This was taken in 1965 from the top of one of the newly built "tall" buildings in Santa Ana.

I wonder if similar pictures of Orange County or L.A. from today will be interesting to people 50 years from now? Everything seems so drab these days, but that's probably what people thought in the mid-60's!

didya notice that every vehicle seen in pic #1 were American made?

Great shot! The Kinney Shoes store and sign are still there but are something else now. The "Deli Food Liquor" sign below it looks exactly the same today (although the store itself went through a remodel a few years back.) Also, the World's Fair sign and the globe that's wedged between the words "World's" and "Fair" still stands, but the globe is painted all white now and the center is called something else. There's a color pic of all three of these signs on page 66 of Charles Phoenix's "Southern California in the '50's."

Major: I think it does not matter what period of time it is. People will always be fascinated with the past.

Ray: Great observation Ray.

TokyoMagic: The next time I am in the OC, I will see if I can get a similar shot of the area as a comparison.

Thanks for all the comments. Very much appreciated, Richard.

I just emailed you another shot of Wilbur Clark's which was taken after it opened. It was dated 3/3/1966 and also shows the surrounding area.
