Meet Sue

With the advent of "Jet Age" travel in the 1960s, the railroads would try anything to hold on to their share of the transportation pie. In this case, the Northern Pacific Railway added stewardess' like "Sue".

The service on these trains like the North Coast Limited was top-notch to say the least. But it was not to be. We all know what happens next. So here we take a look back at the way it was... on trains. ENJOY!

"Travelers Rest" for which this de luxe car was named, was a favorite campsite of explorers Lewis and Clark.

The Lewis and Clark Traveller's Rest Buffet Lounge car, designed by Raymond Loewy, is just one of the extras on the Vista-Dome North Coast Limited. Stewardess service is another extra on this famous transcontinental streamliner.

Sue the stewardess says: Plan your next trip on Northern Pacific's Vista-Dome North Coast Limited. It's the train that makes travel fun again.

Rail Scene 1971

Approximately 40 years ago, we take a look back at what railroads used to be, just before AMTRAK takes over... and a little while after... through some great photographs from George Hamlin - Transportation Specialist. Thank you George!

Milwaukee Road - EMD E8(A) - Canal Street, Chicago, Illinois, April 29, 1971 - The second-last "Cities" streamliner prior to Amtrak begins its westward journey. Note lack of portholes on lead unit.

Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe (ATSF) - EMD FP45 - Roosevelt Road, Chicago, Illinois, October 31, 1970 - "Super Chief / El Capitan" approaching its eastern destination, Dearborn Station.

Penn Central - EMD E8(A) - 18th Street, Chicago, Illinois, April 29, 1971 - The "Broadway Limited" matches a dismal day in appearance, two days before Amtrak.

Penn Central - EMD E7(A) - 18th Street, Chicago, Illinois, April 29, 1971 - Two days before Amtrak, the remant of the "Twilight Limited" presents a pretty sad picture.

Burlington Northern Railroad - EMD F3(A) - North of the station, Glenview, Illinois, May 09, 1971 - Early Amtrak behind an early F unit - Former Northern Pacific units pulling former Great Northern train.

Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific (Rock Island) - EMD E8(A) - LaSalle Street Station, Chicago, Illinois, April 09, 1971 - At the south end of the station.

Illinois Central Railroad - EMD E9(A) - Central Station, Chicago, Illinois, April 09, 1971 - Ready for departure.
